(the worst part – most people think these two things are good and exactly what they need to get into great shape!)

There’s a good chance you’re feeling fat from the holidays and motivated by the clean slate of 2018. That’s great! What’s not great is . . . your chance of success. Roughly 92% of people fail miserably when it comes to achieving New Year’s Resolutions. That may be discouraging, but the really bad part is – two of the things you think are super awesome, “must-haves” for success . . . are actually sabotaging you, keeping results in the distance! Read on to discover the two sneaky weight loss lies to avoid today.

Sneaky Weight Loss Lie #1: INFORMATION (knowledge is power)

But wait! Being informed is a good thing, right? Well, yes it is. But information is a double-edged sword. Let’s dig a little deeper and I think you’ll see what I mean.

Have you ever been guilty of one (or all) of the following:

a) Reading weight-loss/fitness books, blogs, and articles, but never actually getting started.

b) Beginning one program, then jumping to another, then jumping to another, then . . .

c) Creating Frankendiet where you read so much about so many different types of diets that you take pieces from
each to create your own special program.

d) Filled with motivation, you research and research and research to try and discover the best plan for you, yet find
yourself paralyzed and royally confused by all the conflicting information.

We live in the Information Age. It’s like air, it’s everywhere, you can’t escape it. The irony is that researchers are finding all of this information is inhibiting us more than helping. It’s like we’re trying to get a sip of water from a fire hydrant. All we want is some solid guidance, but what we get is a tornado of confusion and contradiction.

It’s easier to fall victim to information overload than it is to land a reality TV gig simply by showing some skin and acting obnoxious. We know more than ever before, but usually do less than we’d like. So, what’s the solution?

Don’t seek information. Instead, find some direction.

Clear-cut direction, not information, will lead you to the promised land of smaller lovehandles and looser clothes. More information is the last thing you need or want.

Yes, learning and knowledge are important. Inevitably, you will learn along the way. But learn too much upfront and you’ll just end up sitting there, scratching your head, wondering if you’ve read too much or not enough. So, how do you go about finding guidance and direction in the blur of today’s information tornado?

Before we get into the solution, let’s move on to the next surprising thing that will limit your results. Here’s the second sneaky weight loss lie to avoid today.

Sneaky Weight Loss Lie #2: CONFIDENCE

We all know that self confidence is a good thing, right? It’s important to have confidence because it increases your chance for success.

What if I told you we’ve got it all wrong?

What if self confidence can actually be the great results killer?

Could it be possible that someone who is fully aware of their weaknesses is more likely to achieve results than the most self-confident person you know?

For some reason, God chose not to bless me with an abundance of melanin. Over the years, I’ve been forced to accept an undeniable fact – I will get sunburned.  There’s no way around it. There’s no denying it; my pale freckled skin is destined for sunburn. Unless! I safeguard against it.

When it comes to weight loss, you have some pasty white burnable skin too.

In much the same way I need to wear sunscreen (or suffer the consequences), you need to determine where you’re not strong and safeguard against your weak points.

  • Maybe it’s eating out at lunch with coworkers.
  • Maybe it’s late-night snacking.
  • Maybe it’s exercise consistency.
  • Maybe it’s the weekends.
  • Maybe it’s all of the above!!

We all have weaknesses. Overconfidence, believing you can simply muster the willpower to overcome these struggles is more than wrong. The authors of Change Anything call it the “willpower trap” and say it like this:

This simplistic view is not only wrong; it’s tragically wrong . . . The willpower trap keeps you in a depressing cycle that begins with heroic commitment to change, which is followed by eroding motivation and terminated inevitably by relapse into old habits.

Eroding motivation and relapse. Sounds pretty terrible, huh?

The good part is there’s a solution. The trick is to be confident enough . . . to admit where you consistently struggle or fail. The road to success is paved with this sort of self-honesty. Don’t be so overly confident that you refuse to truthfully assess your strengths and weaknesses.  Identify where you need help and get it!

Ryan Levesque, author of Ask, says that he “outsources his discipline.” He employs help and accountability in any area of life where he knows he struggles for success. I guarantee your chances of success will skyrocket if you’re willing to do some honest self-assessment and protect yourself . . . from yourself 😉

Wrap Up: What to Do

I like science. It would probably be pretty fascinating to learn about all of the ingredients in sunscreen and how they work to block the sun’s damaging rays from my borderline albino skin. But that would take quite some time. Thank God I’ve been given the guidance of purchasing and applying sunscreen. This simple action protects me from the consequences of the weakness I know I have.

If you’re reading this, you probably want to lose some weight and get into great shape. Forget loading up on information, “learning everything you can,” and fueling your confidence with positive affirmations. You need clarity – action steps – and self-honesty.

So how do you do this? Here are three options.

1) Hire an expert.
It’s often said – you get what you pay for. If you truly want to change your body, this could be the best investment you’ve ever made. A great trainer or coach will take the best information, distill it down to action steps – things you can start doing tomorrow that will make a difference – and then hold you accountable. This is invaluable – IF you want clarity and results.
This is not a sales pitch. I don’t care if you hire me or someone else. I just care if you get results. Find someone who knows their stuff, that you connect with, and make a commit If you’d like to see if we’re a fit, shoot me an email CoreyLittleCoaching [at] gmail.com. If not, I’ll happily refer you to someone else I know and trust.

2) Get a plan.
Another way to get actual “do this” guidance and direction is by finding a well-designed plan and actually following it. There are quite a few decent options out there, but my favorite is the Challenge2Rise. If you prefer a slightly more economical option than hiring an expert, check out C2R.

3) Find a mentor.
This must be someone who has successfully tackled what you want to do. It’s basically the free version of hiring an expert. It can work, but the commitment level is often not quite the same as when money is involved.

If you’re not quite ready to pursue any of the 3 options I’ve listed, do yourself a favor and snag these FREE Ebook about weight loss secrets. It provides some “start doing this tomorrow” action steps and will get you moving in the right direction pronto.

May you lack confidence and information, but find incredible results!
