Vegetable Soup Wisdom

Do you ever read or hear something and it really smacks you? It just lodges in your brain and you realize –

“Wow! That is so true. That’s some insightful, helpful stuff.”

Well, I’ve had a week of those smacks. Typically, I like to gather my thoughts and try to bring organized practical advice, but this week you’re getting a hodgepodge. I like to call this Vegetable Soup Wisdom, because (like vegetable soup), it’s just a bunch of good stuff thrown together. Hope something smacks you like it did me . . .

1 – You are a mash-up of what you choose to let into your life.

You are who you are because of all the stuff you routinely see, hear, and do. That stuff doesn’t just happen. Whether you want to admit it or not, what comes in is your choice. Choose wisely.

2 – Preparation is more powerful than a promise.

All the heartfelt commitment in the world isn’t worth poop if you’re not prepared. Whatever you want to do, to follow through with, opt for major preparation over some puff-your-chest-out, grandstanding promise.

3 – The past is the best indicator for the future.

When looking at your own behavior or someone else’s, what happened in the past is most likely what will be repeated in the future. It certainly doesn’t have to be that way, but to think it’s going to magically change without some work is like believing you’ll get a job you never apply for. Grow up, Count Chocula! If you want to change your life, don’t just wish and hope. Study your past, plan and prepare (see #2), and move forward with purpose.

4 – Jealousy is a schoolyard bully.

This terrible little emotion hurls insults, yanks away your confidence, belittles anything you were proud of, shoves you in the dirt, leaving you defeated, depressed, and sad, then walks away laughing. Don’t be jealous. Instead, be happy for others – for how fit they are, how much money they make, how beautiful they are, how successful they are, the list goes on and on. Being happy for others is like kicking the schoolyard bully in the crotch, knocking his teeth out with an uppercut, then walking away with a smile.

I hope you enjoyed my veggie soup wisdom! If you’ve got anything to add, I’d love to hear about it. Take a couple minutes and share what smacked you in the face. Leave a comment or e-mail me with that chunk of wisdom. Together, we all get better!
