I don’t think I’ve ever read anything more true. One of the simplest and easiest ways to discover your path to success is to learn from someone who has already accomplished what you want to do. It doesn’t have to be rocket surgery!

Well, if you want to lose weight and shed some body fat, I’ve got a treat for you today. Meet Kelly Watkins and Justin Carter, two of my clients and friends. At the time of this writing, Kelly has lost 75 pounds and Justin has shed 102. Yes, that’s a staggering total of 177 pounds! They basically lost . . . me!

Question 1: What’s been the biggest change you’ve made?

Kelly Watkins: My attitude toward exercise and daily diet. How I see exercise – now, it’s something I WANT to do, not something I HAVE to do. I like feeling stronger. Also, my life no longer revolves around food.

Justin Carter: I am MUCH more nutritionally aware. Learning more and more and consistently applying what I learn. Getting into this weight-loss process I said to myself – “I’m not gonna make this torturous. I’m going to make it something I can stick with.”

Question 2: What are the biggest things you’ve noticed since losing the weight?

KW: I have so much more energy! I’m better mentally too. I used to feel like I was in a fog, now I’m no longer in that fog. Before my weight loss, I struggled with debilitating foot pain and was told I had bone spurs on my heels. Now, almost magically, no more foot pain!

JC: Everything is better when you’re in shape. I get a lot more done, enjoy my workouts more, have a whole lot less aches and pains from day to day. I’ve had 2 back surgeries and used to have terrible plantar fasciitis. It took me 10 to 15 minutes just to get moving (somewhat comfortably) when I woke up in the morning. Now – NO foot pain and zero back pain!

Question 3: Looking back, what was holding you back? What kept you from being successful in the past?

KW: Not being realistic. I was always too extreme one way or another, my diet and exercise were either perfect or crap. I couldn’t find or live in the middle.

JC: Taking responsibility. The #1 person that’s gonna stop you is yourself. You are a product of the choices you make. Putting yourself 2nd sounds noble, but you’ve GOT to be okay putting your health first. Also, I took a leap of faith and signed up for a gym membership when I really couldn’t afford it. I HAD to take action. It was time.

Question 4: What would be your advice to someone who is in your old shoes (someone who needs to lose 30 or more pounds)?

KW: Keep at it. Don’t quit. Don’t focus on the scale. Focus on improving your physical health. Your health is more important than wearing a size 6.

JC: I’m a big believer in planning. Write down what you want to do, verbalize it, focus on it. Focus and planning will get you there. You’re going to get derailed, so be prepared for that. Also, when wondering about a certain exercise routine or diet, ask yourself – “Does this interest me?” If not, don’t do it.
